TITLE: Pencil Sketch 18 K
SUBJECT: This 1 page tutorial shows you how to turn a photo into a pencil sketch. The following tip is NOT in the PDF tutorial--I added the drop shadow by making a clipping path around girl and used that selection asthe layermask for her and as the selection to fill a layer below with the shape in black. Custom Tessellating Shapes 230 K
SUBJECT: Download by clicking one of the icons on the left. It contains a set of my custom shapes (shanztess.csh). Load them into Photoshop's Presets Shapes folder. When you open Photoshop, select them from the Custom Shapes flyout tab. Be sure to hold the Shift key down when you drag, to constrain proportions of the shapes! Start tessellating by duplicating. How you get it to fit, depends on the shape!Various combinations of translating, glide and rotation, may apply! You'll have to figure it out. The angles of rotation are always even multiples of 360. Like 30, 60, 90, 120, 180. Use the options bar to fine tune if you've started with a free rotation. You can also use a glide on some, which involves using the flip horizontal or vertical transformation command.

Browser PDF Plugin vs Acrobat Applications 613K
If you are like me, you don’t like the PDF plugin. The function of this plugin opens PDF documents in the browser window, which I find confining and sometimes it does not work properly. Here’s how to set up your Internet browser configuration to use the Application Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader to open these files in the actual Application window. These instructions are for a Mac but they are probably similar for the PC, as well.

TITLE: ShanzGradients
For Photoshop v.6 &7
SUBJECT: Here's a super easy way to apply sepia or old tones to photos in RGB mode. Just download this folder with a bunch of custom gradients in one library preset; "ShanzGradients.grd" and load them into your Gradient Editor. All are in the that one file with the ".grd" appended to it.
STEP 1: Open up a photo and don't do any "adjustments" to it. If the photo is in grayscale mode, change it to RGB mode.
STEP 2: If your image is color, click on the Adjustment/Fill shortcut button at the bottom of Layers and choose "Gradient Map" When the first box opens click in the preview window and select Black to White. Click OK. If you're image is already grayscale look, then go to Step 3.
STEP 3: Now you will load my custom gradients. You can do this by selecting the Gradient Tool and then click in the top Options bar on the little downward black triangle, next to the gradient preview window. The gradient palette opens showing the swatches of gradients. In this box click on the flyout tab (sideways black triangle in a circle) and choose "Load" from the flyout menu. Navigate to where you stored ShanzGradients.grd and load them into the palette. Once that is done, click OK.
STEP 4: Go back to the Layers palette and ADD another Gradient Map Adjustment Layer above the Black & White Gradient Map. When the Gradient Map box opens click in the preview bar and click on the new gradients one at a time. (they will be the last set in the palette) Your image will update with the preview of how these will affect the image. Don't worry if your image looks too dark, you can adjust that after you've made your sepia choice. Click OK.
STEP 5: If your image is too dark, set your foreground color to black, background to white and double click on the first Gradient Map adjustment's thumbnail to reopen it. Click in the gradient bar window so that the big Gradient Editor box opens. Click on the lower left color stop, the roof will turn black. Now click below that in the color swatch window. The big Color Picker box will open. Now click your cursor in the "B" window of the "HSB" field. To lighten just press your Up arrow key and this will increase the Brightness level of the Shadow point. You should move your windows so you can view this on-the-fly "remapping" in the image window. Click Ok and your done.
NOTE: Just a note on the OldTone gradients; this simulates those real old pictures of great great grandpa but you can also use it and then change that Gradient Map's adjusment layer blending mode to "Soft Light" for a really nice Sepia tones.
These tones only work above a "grayscale" looking version of a photo. So think in 2's when using this method. There should be 2 Gradient Map Adjustment Layers. The first Black to White Gradient Map will set your shadow/highlight endpoints, and the second Map applies the tone.

TITLE: Shanz CrossProcess Actions
For Photoshop v.6 thru CS
SUBJECT: Load "ShanzXPActions©2002" into your Actions Palette. Use the Presets Manager or drag and drop it into the Actions Folder. There are 3 variations included in this folder; XP#1, XP#2, XP3. After running one of them on your image, you will have a layered file, and can further adjust your cross processed image, by changing the opacity of the layer(s), the blend mode, or just duplicate the crossprocessed layer for a more intense look. You may also have to add a "Curves or Adjustment Layer." "XP" is my abreviation for "Cross Process" and is NOT referring to the Operating system. This Action works on both Mac & PC. The above animation demonstrates the actions, as is-with no adjustments! Have fun! (11/28/2002)
Thanks to Ron for allowing me to use his wonderful images, which work beautifully, for this process!

TITLE: Golden Section, Rectangle, Spiral
SUBJECT: Design grid templates for arranging design elements and type using this magically proportioned rectangle. This has long been used as a standard for design layout. I've provided Custom Shapes for Photoshop versions 6&7 Mac/Windows.
Also have provided an Illustrator EPS file for version 9+ which, in addition to the rectangle sections, has the golden spiral focus point (the red rectangle). The EPS file may be brought into any program that accepts EPS files by using that program's File Place command.
INSTRUCTIONS for Photoshop Custom Shapes (.csh) : After downloading, load the Custom Shape (.csh) file into Photoshop by using the Edit> Presets Manager, if Photoshop is open; or drag and drop file into Photoshop's Presets Custom Shapes folder, before launching Photoshop. Click on the Custom Shape icon in the Toolbox, then from the top Options bar click the Custom Shapes Picker to open palette, click the flyout menu (triangle in a circle); ShanzGoldenSection.csh should be at the bottom of the flyout menu list. Select it and choose "Append" to add to the current palette. Then select the Shape from the palette and drag the shape while holding the Shift key (to constrain proportion) into the Canvas area. You can use the Free Transform command to rotate and flip this graphic according to your needs. Create new layers above the grid for placement of design elements and/or type. Delete the Golden Section layer before flattening your file.
INSTRUCTIONS for Illustrator (.ai) After downloading and unzipping the file, the eps file will be located inside of that folder. Open in Illustrator or use Photoshop's (or DTP program's) File Place command to import the graphic. Proportionately Resize (hold Shift while dragging corner handle) while bounding box is active to maintain highest quality scale. You can use Illustrator's reflect, rotate and scale commands to resize the graphic according to your needs. Just be sure to scale proportionately, in order to maintain the golden rectangle's true proportion. You can throw away the Title Layer in the Illustrator file and resave. You can either copy (select the graphic) and paste directly into Photoshop or use Photoshop's File>Place command, to bring into Photoshop. The small red rectangle in this graphic is the optimum focus point for this arrangement in any orientation according to the natural spiral. (06/25/2003) (ammended 05/24/06)

new

SUBJECT: This 7 page PDF tutorial provides instructions for building an action to apply one of Mama's digital makeup techniques. Kill two Photoshop birds with one stone because you will learn how to create Actions, to speed up your retouching workflow! (written Oct-2003).
*This is NOT a "how-to" for creating my commercial product, Mama's Powder Action, contrary to a couple of others' (who do not reveal their true identities) false, ignorant, and misleading claims that it is.
This tutorial method I share for free. As it is a "violation" of my intellectual property rights for anyone to copy, publish steps, or create derivative forms of my commercial product. It would be quite stupid of me to divulge it here.
In addition, it would also be a violation for anyone to create the Base Make UP action, shown in this tutorial, for sale, or even publish this tutorial, as this is also my property that I give freely to the Photoshop community, from within the confines of this Web site!
Mama's Powder Action has a unique formula that has been tested on thousands of images over the past several years and is far superior to the method I instruct in this PDF tutorial. However, the Action Retouching tutorial's main intent was and is to show you how to construct an action for a retouching workflow. It's a good tutorial and a good method. Enjoy!

SUBJECT:
COLORING HAIR-THE ROOT-A-MENT-HARIES ©2003
Mama loves to color hair. I have several methods of doing this but will show you 2 simple methods in this tutorial. This project is specific to touching up roots. This comes in handy when someone's Photo Shoot has been scheduled before an overdue trip to the Hair Salon. What takes hours to fix in a Salon, take only a minute to fix Chez Photoshop Mama's!
.
Download or copy the "hair_101.jpg" file to practice along with this tutorial.
Open the "hair_101.jpg" file. This file should be in the Adobe RGB 1998 color space, to match what you see here.
METHOD ONE: Toner = Airbrush on Soft Light Mode Layer
Step One: Create a blank layer abo ve the Background. Set the blank layer's blending mode to Soft Light.
Step Two: Grab a Soft Round 65 Airbrush with the tools top Options Opacity and Pressure set to 100%.
Use the numeric keypad to vary the Opacity percentage, if using a mouse.
If using a Wacom Pen, set the Other Dynamics to Pen Pressure.
Sample a lighter shade from the existing hair by [Mac: Option click on hair], [PC: Alt left click on hair] to sample the color, which will set the foreground color.
With the Soft Light layer highlighted, start painting the dark roots in the image window.
METHOD TWO: Editable Toner = Solid Color Adjustment Layer/Mask in Soft Light Mode
Step One: Create a solid color Adjustment Layer above the Background with a Mask.
Hold down the Option Key [PC:Alt key] as you select "Solid Color" from the Fill/Adjustment shortcut at the bottom of the Layers palette.
When the Color Picker opens, move your cursor to the image window to sample (click) a lighter shade from the existing hair. Click OK, to close the Color Picker.
Step Two: Since you preset the mask the image will not look any different but next to the Adjustment Layer thumbnail in the palette the mask thumbnail will be filled with black. Set this layer's blending mode to Soft Light.
Step Three: Grab a Soft Round 65 Airbrush with the tools top Options Opacity and Pressure set to 100%.
Use the numeric keypad to vary the Opacity percentage, if using a mouse.
If using a Wacom Pen, set the Other Dynamics to Pen Pressure. Set the foreground color in the Tool box to White.
With the Solid Color Fill/Adjustment layer still highlighted in the Layer's palette, begin painting in the dark roots in the image window.
Don't worry if the color isn't exactly what you wantyou can easily edit the whole thing by double clicking on the Color Fill thumbnail of the layer. This will open the Color Picker. Just click your cursor in the big color box, dial in a different hue by using the vertical gradient bar slider and/or drag your cursor to different saturations of the hue in the big color box.
While you're doing this your image window will update with the new value. This is my favorite way to get the toner to match the roots perfectly with an existing lighter shade of the hair.
OPTIONAL: This may be used with Method One or Method Two.
To tone down the newly dyed hair, just pop another Adjustment Layer, but pick Hue and Saturation. Slide the Saturation slider to the left just a tad.
To change the tone hue or lightness, adjust those sliders. Click OK and Group this layer with the Solid Color Adjustment layer or the painted layer, by pressing [Mac: Command G], [PC: Control G]. I havto fix Chez Photoshop Mama's!
